Patch Diff

ghidriff · ikeext.dll (KB5017305)

Heap out-of-bounds read in Windows IKEv2 extension (ikeext.dll). IkeQueueRecvRequest allocates a WFP memory buffer via WfpMemAlloc using an unchecked bufferSize derived from attacker-controlled IKEv2 fragment headers. During reassembly, the code copies merged fragment data and later accesses the buffer at offset [3], causing an out-of-bounds read. Reachable via UDP/500 IKEv2 fragmentation payload.

Pre-patch version 10.0.22000.708
Post-patch version 10.0.22000.978
Function Address Change Note
IkeQueueRecvRequest modified Added bounds validation on bufferSize derived from IKEv2 fragment headers before WfpMemAlloc

Attack Path

Heap out-of-bounds read from IKEv2 fragment reassembly with an unchecked buffer size

Attack path for CVE-2022-34721 Heap out-of-bounds read from IKEv2 fragment reassembly with an unchecked buffer size 01 — ENTRY Attacker sends fragmented IKEv2 traffic to UDP/500 Remote, pre-authentication, same exposed IKE surface as CVE-2022-21849. 02 — CONTROLLED INPUT Fragment headers carry the size used for the reassembly allocation bufferSize is derived from attacker-controlled IKEv2 fragment header fields. 03 — PATH IkeQueueRecvRequest allocates a WFP buffer and merges the fragments into it WfpMemAlloc is called with the derived size, then merged fragment data is copied in. 04 — MISSING CHECK bufferSize is never validated before WfpMemAlloc A size smaller than what reassembly needs leaves later access at offset [3] reading past the allocation. The patch adds bounds validation on bufferSize before the allocation. 05 — PRIMITIVE Out-of-bounds heap read in a network-facing kernel component Read-only OOB - crash or information disclosure depending on adjacent heap contents.

Derived from the patch delta: the checks added by the vendor identify which fields crossed a trust boundary unvalidated. Reachability and privilege are taken from the call chain in the RCA report.
