Patch Diff

ghidriff · clfs.sys (KB5068861)

Off-by-0x28 out-of-bounds read in clfs.sys ClfsGetFirstRecord. The record offset is read from +0x28 of the caller-supplied buffer and bounds-checked as `offset <= bufferLen + 0x28`, which permits the offset to point up to 0x28 bytes past the end of the allocation; the resulting pointer is then returned and consumed as a _CLFS_RECORD_HEADER. The patch requires `offset + 0x28 <= bufferLen` so the whole header fits inside the buffer, and adds a minimum `offset > 0x6f`. Gated behind Feature_1005355321 - the original comparison still ships and runs when the flag is disabled.

Pre-patch version 10.0.26100.7019
Post-patch version 10.0.26100.7171
Function Address Change Note
ClfsGetFirstRecord code (bounds check corrected, gated on Feature_1005355321) Pre-patch returned param_1 + offset when `offset <= param_2 + 0x28`, permitting the record offset to land up to 0x28 bytes PAST the end of the buffer. Patched (flag-enabled) path requires `offset + 0x28 <= param_2` so the whole 0x28-byte _CLFS_RECORD_HEADER fits inside the buffer, and adds a new minimum `offset > 0x6f`. The flag-disabled branch keeps the original comparison.
Feature_1005355321__private_IsEnabledDeviceUsageNoInline / _IsEnabledFallback added -- CFR gate Selects between the corrected and original bounds test. Both ship in 10.0.26100.7171.

Attack Path

Off-by-0x28 out-of-bounds read - the record offset was allowed to point past the end of the buffer

Attack path for CVE-2025-60709 Off-by-0x28 out-of-bounds read - the record offset was allowed to point past the end of the buffer 01 — ENTRY Standard user creates a CLFS log and reads records from it CreateLogFile plus a record read. CLFS is a core kernel component present on every install; logs live in user-writable directories, so the buffer contents are attacker-supplied. 02 — CONTROLLED INPUT The record offset at +0x28 of the buffer is attacker-chosen ClfsGetFirstRecord reads `uVar1 = *(uint *)(param_1 + 0x28)` straight out of the caller's buffer. param_2 is the buffer length. 03 — PATH The offset is bounds-checked and then used to form a record-header pointer Pre-patch: `if (0x27 < uVar1 + 0x28) { p = param_1 + uVar1; if (param_2 + 0x28 < uVar1) p = NULL; return p; }` 04 — MISSING CHECK The comparison allows the offset to exceed the buffer by up to 0x28 bytes The test is `uVar1 <= param_2 + 0x28`, i.e. the offset may run 0x28 bytes past the end. The correct relation is `uVar1 + 0x28 <= param_2` - the whole 0x28-byte header must fit INSIDE the buffer. The patch uses that form and adds a minimum `uVar1 > 0x6f`, keeping the offset clear of the header region. 05 — PRIMITIVE A _CLFS_RECORD_HEADER is read from up to 0x28 bytes beyond the allocation The returned pointer is consumed as a record header, so adjacent pool contents are parsed as CLFS metadata. Fix is gated behind Feature_1005355321; the original comparison still ships and runs when the flag is off.

Derived from the patch delta: the checks added by the vendor identify which fields crossed a trust boundary unvalidated. Reachability and privilege are taken from the call chain in the RCA report.
