Attack Path

Hyper-V VSMB file operations duplicate handles into SYSTEM context without authenticating the guest caller

Attack path for CVE-2025-59517 Hyper-V VSMB file operations duplicate handles into SYSTEM context without authenticating the guest caller 01 — ENTRY A user inside a Hyper-V guest sends a VSMB request over VMBus \Device\STORVSP\VSMB, IOCTL 0x240330. No host credentials required - guest-user privilege is enough. Server SKUs with the Hyper-V role and VSMB enabled. 02 — CONTROLLED INPUT The guest names the target file and the operation to perform FileRenameInformation or FileDispositionInformation against host paths. 03 — PATH VspVsmbFileCreate and VspVsmbHandleSetInformationFileRequest service the request They call ObDuplicateObject to bring the handle into SYSTEM context, then ZwSetInformationFile. 04 — MISSING CHECK Neither function authenticates the caller before duplicating the handle The guest's authority is never checked against the host object being manipulated. The patch adds caller authentication before duplication and restricts the duplication scope. 05 — PRIMITIVE Guest-driven rename or delete of protected host directories A guest-to-host boundary crossing - the most severe reachability class in this set.

Derived from the patch delta: the checks added by the vendor identify which fields crossed a trust boundary unvalidated. Reachability and privilege are taken from the call chain in the RCA report.
